The humble donut may not be overly special in itself, but it is a treat which many of us go mad for! But where did donuts first come from, and how did their growth lead to the takeover of the sweet treat world? When it comes to sweet treats, the seemingly simple and humble donut is arguably one of the most popular dishes around. Simple yet so very delicious, even the thought alone of these wondrous little rings of dough would be enough to make a person salivate in anticipation. But how did donuts come about, and how did their invention and first creation eventually lead to the takeover of the treat industry? Why are they so very popular?
First Donuts The first donuts were far simpler than the extravagantly decorated versions which we know and love today. First seen in New York after Dutch settlers brought with them the previously unseen “oil cakes” from their homeland, which served as the basis for modern donut recipes, save for the addition of candied and fresh fruits to the old style dough. Most commonly, these early and primitive versions of ‘donuts’—which were really more like dough balls than anything—would either be eaten plain or with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar. In some ways, these probably resembled modern jam donuts as opposed to the extra sweet, iced ring donuts that we consume nowadays.
Invention Of Ring Donuts While the original takes on donuts were round and spherical, in a somewhat similar manner to modern jam or custard donuts, it wasn’t until the mid 19th century that the first examples of ring donuts were seen. According to its supposed inventor, Hanson Gregory, he had first come up with the concept for these iconic treats while aboard a trading vessel at the age of 16 after finding that traditional donuts were often undercooked, or even raw, on the inside. In fact, it was as a result of his ideas that the modern term for donuts originated, due to Gregory’s mother making the decision to put a nut in the middle of the dough prior to cooking in order to avoid this raw finish—hence the doughnut was coined, or donut, as we prefer to call it nowadays.
Modern Donuts In our modern world, the donut is a treat that is highly favored for its succulence and versatility for a number of different tastes and occasions.
