The average human spends one-third of his or her life in bed. And that’s not counting the sleep-ins, extra short naps, and the unending hours of sleep you had as a baby. Pheww! Now you can imagine how important it is to nail the perfect mattress for you, every time you go shopping for one – hey, you spend a significant part of your life on that thing. More so, the way you sleep – your sleep pattern, sleeping posture, etc – directly affects your health in more ways than you can imagine. In other words, how you sleep directly affects your life, and your choice of mattress is a big part of it. It’s easier to just walk into any store and pick any mattress you find, and it’s often common to be sold mattress that’s far from perfect by sleazy mattress salesmen. However, these two situations would mostly lead to you not owning the right mattress fit for you. And then your health is at risk. The purpose of this article is to help you easily choose the perfect mattress just for you, to make your sleeping time as refreshing and enjoyable as possible. Here are few tips to help you: 1. Know the various types of mattress How to choose the best mattress starts from knowing the different mattresses available in the market. Be careful however to not be sold the idea that there are tons of different types of mattresses; most different types of mattresses are basically the same and only given various brand names and unnecessary additional specs. Basically, there are about 5 types of mattresses, from which other numerous types spring. These are innerspring mattress, memory foam mattresses, latex mattress, and hybrid mattress. As can be imagined from its name, innerspring mattress consists of steel coils, such as springs, which are then covered with padding or upholstery materials, such as foams and fibers. They are some of the oldest and most popular mattresses around, and they’re very comfortable. Memory foam mattresses, originally developed by the NSA, have the unique ability to conform to your body weight, temperature and sleep posture to give you a great sleep experience. Latex is made of, well, latex. Both latex and memory foam are good at suppressing motion, and therefore ideal for sleeping partners, so one sleeper’s motion never disturbs the other. There are also hybrid versions that combine 2 or more of these mattress materials. For example, there are now memory foams with inner springs. 2. Identify your unique needs Now that you know the various types of mattresses, it’s apt to consider your sleep needs in order to purchase the perfect one. Don’t be deceived into thinking there’s a one-size-fits-all mattress for everybody. The type of mattress you buy (in terms of material used, size, etc) will depend on various factors like your age, your size – weight and height, your room temperature or your preferred bed temperature, your health condition (an adult that suffers from back pain wouldn’t use the same mattress a healthy child would), whether you have a sleeping partner or not, the size of your room or space available for your bed, your budget, your preference as to hardness and thickness, and so on. 3. Try before buying Truth is, no matter how much research you do before buying a mattress, the best way to end up buying a mattress perfect for you is by trying or testing it out for comfort – because at the end of the day, your comfort is all that matters. Try out every type of mattress possible to find out which you’re most comfortable on. Ask to lie down on as many mattresses as possible in the stores you’re shopping in. Spend few minutes on each to find which gives you the most comfort. More so, whenever you have a great sleep in a friend’s or in a hotel, ensure to find out what brand the mattress is, and go hunt for it. Finally, when you find your ideal mattress, using the tips above, try to haggle. Negotiate the price; you just might be able to save some money on your perfect mattress!
